Soren Armitage is an anachronism. Proclaimed Rathen Champion by the Rathen Rose, intended to support the rule of a Rathen King or Queen.
But there are no Rathens.
Resigned to symbolising only Darest's faded glories, Soren is not prepared for the sudden appearance of a Rathen. Now she must find and support the heir despite the machinations of the kingdom's regent, sylvan curses, and the strange behaviour of once-dormant protective enchantments.
While the odds seem stacked against her, Soren is determined to do her best to live up to the name of Rathen Champion. But what is she to do when it seems that there is something very wrong with her Rathen? Can she trust the person she is meant to protect?

There are a lot of quickly written books available these days. I can’t say the level of thought put into them isn’t a lot (who knows?) but i can fly through them, and they don’t make me pause to think of the author’s talent and want to exclaim about craftsmanship.THIS book (and this author’s other works) are *amazingly* well-crafted. Her stories are original - you truly won’t find others like them. Her characters have depth, they’re real, they’re intriguing, they infuriate and captivate. Her plot lines MOVE and hook you. There’s mystery, magic, a bit of romance....all things that can make a book enjoyable.
But what I find astonishing is the amount of action and meaning she is able to convey in each sentence. Her books take me longer to read (per page) because the beauty of how she’s written and conveyed the story makes me pause, makes me re-read - like staring at an artist’s painting that has depth and new things to find every time you look. You may not pick up/buy a book for this reason - but I assure you all the other reasons you’d buy a book are present in this. But just note how much her powerful prose adds to the experience when you do buy it. I can (and do) read her books over and over, and marvel each time at her craftsmanship.

Champion of the Rose Darest Book 1 Andrea K Höst 9780980878943 Books Reviews
Host has created another interesting world with loveable and interesting characters. The main character starts out as the underdog without any special talents, but with determination and dedication she battles her way out of all the threats and mysteries.
Although Host doesn't write books with explicit sex scenes, she did create a world where relationships are very different. It is a world where everybody is bisexual. Host doesn't give that fact extra attention. She does not explain or expound on it. That is simply the way it is in that world! Food for thought anyway...
In the end the main character has accomplished much, but the price she has had to pay is rather high. So maybe that is a reason to write another book situated in Darest?
Premise The land of Darest was taken by treaty from the Fae, and order is maintained by the magic of the Rose, established by the first Queen. Unfortunately, when the line of Rathen kings failed, the magic didn't notice, and it continued to choose Champions to protect a nonexistent royal line. Soren doesn't have any idea why the magic chose her, forced her, into the role of Champion, but now a bloom has appeared on the Rathen Rose. And that means a rightful heir is alive.
The part of this book I liked most was the character of Soren. Uneasy in her role, conflicted in her purpose, she always has to balance what she wants to do with what is right, what is her duty, and what the controlling magic of the Rose will actually allow her to do. Her struggles to fight and/or use the instincts of that blind force are deeply compelling.
The plot becomes complicated fairly quickly, and I don't want to give much away. I can say that the magic used in the book is interesting, and there are basicaly no infodumps. Both the political situation between the humans and the fae, and the fae themselves, are well handled. One warning, large aspects of the romantic plot are very dark. I wasn't totally satisfied with the resolution to that part of the story, but overall the plot was intriguing and the ending was strong.
Also, while it was never an issue, the norm among all the people in the book seemed to be bisexuality, and I thought that was pretty awesome.
A political and emotional story more than action-packed, Champion of the Rose is an enjoyable, worthwhile read.
This is my least favorite of Andrea's books, but it's still worth reading. The writing is beautiful, the story compelling, the characters drawn well. But (spoiler, sorry) there is a rape at the heart of the story that makes it a much darker book than most of her others. I love the second book in the series and that one is much more enjoyable if you've read this one first, so I'm still recommending it, but I found the central relationship hard to relate to or believe in. That said, I didn't stop reading until I'd finished and I read it a second time to decide how to review it, so it's also got plenty that's done right. The world-building is incredible and the twists and turns in the story were always a surprise.
Yet another Host novel that reeled me in, kept me hooked, and spat me back out after finishing it only 2 days later with a total book hangover. She writes fantasy while creating truly unique worlds with captivating histories. And her characters, their motives and feelings and relationships, are so incredibly compelling!
Champion of the Rose did not disappoint. Soren is bound by an old enchantment for reasons that fail to satisfy, but performs her duties admirably even as she struggles to make her fate mean something more. Strake similarly rails against being a puppet, but still manages to put his country's well-being first. I liked them both.
However, I was utterly enchanted with Lord Aristide, the Diamond Courveur, and hope to see more of him in the sequel. Someone needs to melt through that polished exterior of his and find what lays at the heart of the man! I look forward to getting to know how he feels about his world.
There is one last character who plays a pivotal role in this book, but who circumstances never allow us to get to know at all beyond his actions and the things that have been done to him. His part in the story is nothing short of fascinating, and I would very much like to see where things go for him now that he has control of his own life, even if only mentioned in passing.
On to the next!
