New York has a problem few are aware of. Creatures of myth and darkness prowl the night-shrouded streets, preying on those who won’t be missed. At least, those are the rules. Bodies are turning up, and their deaths are far from natural. Our kind’s existence depends on remaining nothing more than folklore and fairytales, but someone has decided to break the rules. Now it’s my job to stop a conspiracy before it threatens to expose the truth about vampires and werewolves. My name is Leo Malone, and when things go bump in the night, I bump back. If the price is right.

Brooklyn Shadows is a fantastic page-turning action thriller for anyone who enjoys action and laugh out loud banter regardless of genre.

This review is for the Audible version of the book.

Years ago, I read a series of books about a Vampire PI written by P.N. Elrod. I have looked for more books in this genre and have never been able to find them....until now! I loved this book!

Leo Malone is a snarky, unfeeling bastard of a vampire who happens to be a PI. When he is hired by two separate clients to find one missing werewolf, he figures he might as well cash in on the windfall.

In his search for the werewolf, he encounters a group of rogue vampires, mafia bosses, and an unexpected love interest. My favorite character was Marvin, a streetwise (in his own mind) computer hacker hired by Leo to find information. The exchanges between Marvin (known only by himself as Mo Money) and Leo are priceless!

I loved the writing, the story and the narration was amazing! Mr. Cohen does an excellent job and I will definitely look for more books that he has narrated. And, I hope that Mr. Deskins continues to write more adventures for Leo.

I was given the chance to listen to this audiobook by the narrator and chose to review it.

Shrouds of Darkness Brooklyn Shadows Book 1 edition by Brock Deskins Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Hallmarks of Deskin's writing good characterization, interesting worldbuilding, relatively straightforward plot but not so straightforward as to be too predictable. Chekhov's Gun was pretty heavily trope'd, but, in my opinion, enjoyably.

Not a book I'd rave over, but thoroughly enjoyable all around.
I'd give it a 4.5 if I could - the same way attractiveness is a 9/10 at maximum, and a 10/10 when it satisfies your niche. This book is the same way - good, well-written, enjoyable characters, simply doesn't tickle my fancy the same way some of Deskins other books do.
This is the best example of this genre done right that I've read, hands down. And by 'this genre' I mean the pulp horror / noir bit that diverges subtly but significantly from the more main-line urban fantasy. The protagonist, especially is an absolute joy an unapologetic monster who's accepted his monster status and decided to at least make it useful. And that's BEFORE the vampire thing comes into play.

Essentially, this reads like an old-school Phillip Marlowe story with a bit more of an outright villain protagonist who is only in it to protect his own skin, but decides to go all in while he's at it. The characters are all genuine, distinctive characters that are fleshed-out and interesting in their own right, with the supernatural elements serving to drive the story and as an excuse to drive the violence up to 11, and never used to substitute for legitimate characterization. The Vampire and Werewolf gangs are quite literally _gangs_, and would be just as compelling if they were human criminals (in fact, there are humans running around who are in fact equally compelling) with the claws mostly coming out because describing a vicious mauling is more awesome than a knifing, and an ambush scene is much more fun when Napalm is required to keep your targets from standing back up.

It's very difficult to do villain protagonist right, without making him unsympathetic (i.e. not a protagonist) or giving him too many redeeming qualities (i.e. not a villain). Deskins hits the balance perfectly, not just with the narrating character, but with ALL of the characters, human and otherwise. They're almost all terrible people, human or otherwise, but without losing any of that terribleness and fully acknowledging that they're very much monsters you're still very much rooting for the home team by the end. He manages to make them _our_ monsters.

Smart, funny, and packed with your recommended daily dose of explosions. I can't recommend this enough.
Shrouds of Darkness
Brooklyn Shadows, Book 1
By Brock Deskins
This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Loved it! If you like vampires, werewolves, mysteries, humor, and fast paced fun reads this is your book. A vampire PI and occasionally hired gun/body guard takes a case that ends up taking 3 cases... all from different parties and all lead to the same conclusion. Action packed, with lots of humor scattered throughout that kept me giggling like a school girl, and great fight scenes for the evil side of me ;p
Just finished reading “Shrouds of Darkness (Brooklyn Shadows Book 1) by Brock Deskins. I enjoyed this book on many different levels. The genre is a bit hard to pin down, but if I were to attempt to describe it, I’d say it’s Pulp Horrory/Noir/Paranormal. This is a genre all in it’s own category as it really doesn’t fit into the usual mainstream Urban Fantasy mold. I cannot remember the last time I laughed out loud while reading a book. The characters, and especially the main character Leo (don’t call me Leonard) Malone is quite the unusual vampire character. PI Vampire Leo’s interaction with his techno wizard Marvin, but his crew call him Mo’ Money is brilliant, hysterical and off the charts funny. If you like a little mystery, action thriller mixed with paranormal along with vampires, werewolves and gangsters you will love this read. This is my first read by Brock Deskins, but will not be my last. I look forward to the continued stories in this series.

Synopsis (from cover) Leo Malone Vampire, bodyguard, Private detective, and all around pain in the ass is hired to find a client's father who has gone missing, but not only is the missing man an accountant for the mob, he is a full-blooded werewolf.
What seems to be a simple case of a werewolf run amok turns into a massive conspiracy that threatens to reveal the existence of both species as the brutally dismembered bodies of humans begin turning up all around
